Wanting to Explain Ourselves More Than Necessary

Sometimes we say more than we need to.

Not because anyone asked,
but because it feels like we should.

A simple response turns into a longer one.
A small decision comes with an explanation.
Something neutral starts to feel like it needs context.

It’s not always obvious at the moment.

It can feel like being clear,
or just making sure nothing is misunderstood.

But underneath it, there’s often a quiet pull
to make things land a certain way.

To be seen accurately.
To avoid being misread.
To close any space where something could be assumed.

So we add a little more.

An extra sentence.
A bit of reasoning.
Something to make it feel complete.

And most of the time, it goes unnoticed.

A small shift is recognizing when that urge shows up.

Not stopping it completely,
but noticing the moment where the explanation starts to extend beyond what was needed.

Where clarity turns into something else.

That space can be easy to miss.

But when it’s there,
it becomes a little clearer what we’re responding to.

And things feel a little easier to leave as they are.
