There are certain sounds we hear so often that we eventually stop noticing them consciously.
The sound of traffic outside a window.
A train passing at a certain time.
Voices in another room.
The subtle sounds of a familiar place we spend a lot of time in.
At first, sounds like these can feel noticeable or distracting.
But over time, they slowly blend into the background of everyday life.
And often, we only realize how present they were once they disappear.
What makes this interesting is how strongly certain sounds can become tied to specific periods of our lives without us fully noticing it while we’re living through them.
A place begins to have its own atmosphere not only visually, but through sound too.
And after enough time, those sounds stop feeling separate from the environment itself.
They become part of what “normal” feels like there.
Sometimes, hearing the same sound again much later can immediately bring back the feeling of a certain place or period of time.
Not always through a specific memory.
Sometimes it’s just a feeling of familiarity that returns before we even fully understand why.
